Care & materials
Materials and care
Teak and natural fibres age beautifully, and a little routine care keeps them looking their best for decades. Here is everything you need, by material.
Teak and solid wood
- Dust regularly with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, following the grain.
- Wipe spills promptly, and avoid letting water sit on the surface.
- Keep pieces out of prolonged direct sunlight, and away from radiators and air-con vents.
- Use coasters, mats and felt pads to guard against heat, moisture and scratches.
- Once or twice a year, work in a thin coat of a suitable teak or furniture oil with a lint-free cloth, then buff. This nourishes the wood and evens the tone.
- Left untreated, teak slowly mellows to a soft silver-grey. Oiling keeps its warm honey colour, so the choice is yours.
Rattan and cane
- Dust into the weave with a soft brush or a vacuum brush attachment.
- Clean gently with a barely damp cloth, then let it dry fully before use.
- Keep out of constant direct sun, which can dry and embrittle the fibres.
- If cane sags slightly, a light mist of water on the underside and a dry overnight can help it tighten.
Linen and upholstery
- Vacuum lightly and plump cushions regularly so they wear evenly.
- Blot spills at once with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in. Do not rub.
- Keep out of direct sun to avoid fading.
- For anything stubborn, a professional upholstery clean is safest.
A few don’ts
- No silicone sprays or all-purpose cleaners, which can build up or dull the finish.
- Do not soak surfaces or leave damp cloths resting on them.
- Lift rather than drag when moving a piece.
Need a hand?
Deeper scratches or marks in teak can usually be sanded and refinished by a professional, which is part of why solid wood lasts. If you are unsure, contact us and we’ll advise.
